Party on! Dressing up for the holidays

Apart from finding fabulous gifts for loved ones, scouting for the perfect dress to brighten up the holidays is one task that stylish women such as Liz Rehnke take seriously. For these women, dressing up for the holidays means looking chic and elegant without going overboard.

So what dresses are perfect for the season?

Fashion magazine Marie Claire has come up with a holiday style guide for those who are looking for something fabulous to wear to chic cocktail parties and family get-togethers. Below are some of these festive getups:

What would the holiday season be without a little bit of sparkle? A sequined dress like the one from Philipp Plein gives the LBD (little black dress) instant glam, making it a chic choice for the glitzy weekend shindig. For extra wattage, black tights and metallic heels can be paired with the sequined LBD. For a more daring look, a one-shoulder dress in gold sequins, like the one from Opulence England, is a great choice.

For the office Christmas bash, a dress with an appropriate amount of oomph mixed with some delicate lace detailing is both elegant and tasteful. An example would be the black ruffle lace dress from Notte by Marchesa. Meanwhile, Calvin Klein Collection’s metallic jacquard shift dress would make for the perfect holiday office party attire if the event calls for the usual office dress code.

As for family get-togethers, a conservative but stylish dress is appropriate, especially when grandparents and children are around. The gold babushka lace dress by Issa will certainly get the approval of elders and fashionistas alike. Meanwhile, a ‘60s-inspired polka dot bubbly dress from Rose is the perfect attire for toasting champagne with grandma over gingerbread.

Women and Shoes: A Love Story

Sharing an interesting article about women and their love for beautiful shoes. This was written by Mina Azodi and was published on Cosmopolitan.com.

Long before spiked heels with exotic names (Louboutin, anyone?) became objects of desire, chicks have been shoe-crazy. But recently, we got proof of exactly how crazy: While sales of most things have plummeted thanks to the recession, footwear sales have gone up compared to the same period last year. Yes, buying a pair of shoes has always had near-supernatural effects — like instantly updating an outfit from last year or just making you feel hotter than hell — but that doesn't fully explain how footwear is beating the odds in sales. Trust science to have the answer: Turns out, we've always been wired for shoe lust, even when the going gets tough.

Happy Feet
First of all, there's some serious mood-boosting going on when you try on any kind of apparel. "The neurotransmitter dopamine is released, providing a feel-good high, similar to taking a drug," says Martin Lindstrom, a branding expert for Fortune 100 companies and author of Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy. "The dopamine increases until you swipe your debit card." Usually, the high then flatlines, and guilt starts creeping in...except, that is, when the item you're purchasing is a pair of shoes. "Shoppers rationalize shoes as a practical buy — something they can wear multiple times a week — so they hold on to that pleasurable feeling longer," says Lindstrom.

But it's not just dopamine at work. Shoes' mood-altering traits also come from another brain reaction, says Lindstrom. Buying new footwear stimulates an area of the brain's prefrontal cortex termed the collecting spot. "Shoes are a collector's item, whether women realize they perceive them that way or not," says Suzanne Ferriss, PhD, editor of Footnotes: On Shoes. Just think of how they're often stored artfully on shoe trees and shelves. "They're like sculptures," says Ferriss. As a result, collecting each type provides a mini-adrenaline rush similar to the satisfaction a stamp collector gets when he acquires a rare find.

A Higher Power
All those wonderful feelings are intensified when you choose high heels...but again, it's biology, not Jimmy Choo, at work. "Like most animals, we're wired to associate height with power," says Helen Fisher, PhD, professor of anthropology at Rutgers University. "High heels can literally raise your status because you're taller when you wear them."

Heels carry historical significance as well, adding to their appeal. In previous centuries, only the wealthy wore high heels — everyone else had practical footwear to do manual labor. "Shoes were a measure of class," says Fisher, "and we still have a bit of that mind-set ingrained in us."

Sexual Heeling
Now go even higher — to stilettos — and another element rears its head: sex. Stilettos are undoubtedly foxy, but why, exactly? "When a woman wears them, she assumes a primal mating pose called lordosis," says Fisher. "Her butt lifts, and her back arches."

But there's more to it than how hot your ass looks. According to Daniel Amen, MD, author of The Brain in Love, our minds are structured in a way that may associate feet with sex. "The area of the brain that communicates with the genitals is right next to the area that deals with the feet," says Dr. Amen. "These regions share neural crosstalk, which may be why shoes can be erotic." And we thought it was just our lust for high style talking.

Fashionable lit: Liz Rehnke and the Anna Karenina-inspired collection

Elizabeth Rehnke Image Credit: Styleite.com

There is something that stylish women like Liz Rehnke can look forward to this month -- something that will remind them about the glamorous style of Russia’s high society that Leo Tolstoy wrote about in his first novel.

A year after Banana Republic debuted its Mad Men capsule collection, a salute to the trendy men and women in the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency, the company is launching a new line, this time inspired by Anna Karenina, Tolstoy’s epic 1877 novel about life, love, and affairs among Russian aristocrats in the mid-19th century. The limited edition clothes will drum up the hype for the November release of the movie adaptation of the book.

Banana Republic collaborated with Jacqueline Durran, the film’s costume designer for the 76-piece collection for fashion-forward women, something Liz Rehnke would be very happy about. Drawing inspiration from the mid-19th century garb of Russian upper class, such as velvet fabrics and dramatic brocade patterns, the collection embodies the past but with a modern take. For instance, a red evening gown worn by Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina—one of the central costumes in the film—has been redesigned as a knee-length shift that can be worn to work under a blazer.

Accessories such as luxurious pearls and crystals that Knightley wore in the film were reinterpreted, too by the retailer. Same goes for the many luxe furs and huge baubles that graced the film. All of these items made their way to the capsule collection, a throwback to Russian luxury.

Banana Republic’s Anna Karenina-inspired collection will be available by the end of October.

Elizabeth Rehnke: The best of New York Fashion Week

This Elizabeth Rehnke blog article discusses some of the collections unveiled during the September 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

Elizabeth Rehnke Image Credit: chamberlinrubber.com

Leaves are just starting to fall, but in the fashion world, it is more spring than autumn. This was evident as designers like Peter Som and Joseph Altuzarra unveiled their Spring 2013 collections during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

The fashion marathon highlighted dreamy floral prints, which were very much evident in Peter Som’s show. The Carpenters’ “Close to You” was the perfect song for Som’s model to sashay to as she showed off the designer’s jeans in a pink print that reminded fashionistas like Elizabeth Rehnke of bubble gum.

Joseph Altuzarra was also in a spring state of mind but with a twist. The collection he unveiled had a bit of fall flavor in it. He said, “Women always tell me, ‘Why can’t spring clothes be more like fall’ -- layered but at the same time light.”

So that was what he did. The standout pieces in Altuzarra’s collection include slim-fitting linen skirts in an antique floral print which were combined with French blue cotton shirts embroidered with clear stones and finished with roomy gray-blue striped jackets.

Although most of the designers who paraded their collections during the fashion extravaganza stayed loyal to the usual spring look (floral prints and pastel colors), many fashion watchers agree that bold styles dominated the week-long show. Saturated colors and edgy patterns were all over the runway. Cutouts and corsets were frequent sightings, along with longer leather hemlines and skirt suits. These may not be reminiscent of spring, but for Liz Rehnke and other stylish women out there, these represent what fashion is all about: There’s no such thing as typical.

Elizabeth Rehnke: Fashionable tips for a stylish travel

Elizabeth Rehnke image credit: luxuryat1.com

If there are two things Elizabeth Rehnke can’t live without, they would probably be fashion and travel. For her, these two make life more interesting and colorful, especially when they are combined. When the exhilarating travel life mixes with the aesthetic pleasures of the fashion universe, a woman just can’t help but be overwhelmed with delight—a sensation that can be experienced by adhering to the following stylish travel tips:

Prioritizing comfort. When it comes to travel fashion, comfort is always the key. For example, in warm-weather destinations, stretchable fabrics like cotton are advisable for better mobility; they do not limit the traveler’s movements and they can also be packed easier.

Bringing neckwear. Elizabeth Rehnke and other fashion experts believe that a beautiful shawl or scarf can be the most versatile item a stylish traveler can bring. Placed on the lap during transportation, around the shoulders when the weather’s cold, or around the neck held together with a brooch, a well-chosen neckwear can go a long way.

Purchasing local accessories. Leaving expensive jewelry at home and buying local treasures can help travelers to blend naturally with the crowd. Not only that, tourists will be able to bring home accessories that they can add to their expansive fashion vault.

By following the said tips, tourists can prove that they do not have to choose between travel and fashion—they can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Liz Rehnke and summer in the sunshine state

Elizabeth Rehnke image credit: iandrinstitute.org

For seasoned traveler Liz Rehnke, St. Petersburg, Florida is home. This blog talks about what Florida offers residents and viewers during the summer.

Summer in Florida can get hot. Not desert hot, but wet, humid heat of a steamy jungle. The midday sun is unforgiving, burning the skin and drenching clothes in sweat. Then in the afternoon, storms roll from the Gulf of Mexico, and amid flashes of lightning and clashes of thunder, drop copious volumes of rain. By evening, the temperature cools down to become downright pleasant, except for mosquitoes, bugs, and lizards that creep out of the jungle.

But despite all of these, tourists still troop to Florida during the summer because the sunshine state has so much more to offer apart from its eccentric weather.

Elizabeth Rehnke image credit: infloridaonline.com

For Liz Rehnke and other Florida natives, the state’s beaches are among the best in the U.S., if not the planet. The warm weather plus the hundreds of miles of beaches attract about 60 million visitors to Florida every year. Thus, it is no wonder that Florida was named as the top destination state in 2011.

Then there are the amusement parks. Orlando, where the Walt Disney Resort World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Busch Gardens are located, attracts more visitors than any other amusement park destinations in the U.S. Who can resist Mickey Mouse, Harry Potter, and Shamu?

And because Florida is a melting pot of various cultures and ethnic groups, one’s vacation can turn into a gastronomic trip for the bold and the daring.

These are just some of the things visitors can do in summer or any season for that matter in Florida. The sunshine state knows how to party, if the weather permits that is.

In the United States, famous shopping destinations include Macy’s in New York and the shops along Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. But Asia, being the world’s largest continent, also boasts of many shopping destinations in different countries, all of which have their own flair, culture, and merchandise for sale. Bangkok in Thailand has chic malls and small, quaint street markets offering almost everything imaginable. Another place worth looking into is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which has an immense variety of items for sale, ranging from clothes, DVDs and CDs, books, and intricate works of Malaysian craftsmen such as batik clothing and wood carvings. Elizabeth Rehnke and the Oregon sandals

Shoe collector and self-confessed fashionista Elizabeth Rehnke considers her shoe collection as one of her most prized possessions. The following blog talks about the earliest footwear originating from the American Southwest.

Archeologist Luther Cressman and his team from the University of Oregon went on an expedition in 1938, and discovered 75 sagebrush sandals covered in volcanic ash at the Fort Rock Cave site in Lake County, Oregon. By using carbon dating technology, Cressman declared that the sandals were more than 9,000 years old, and were believed to be left by the inhabitants due to the eruption of the Mount Azama volcano some 7,500 years ago.

Named after the site where they were discovered, the Oregon Sandals have turned up in several basins in the Northern Great regions of the United States

Elizabeth Rehnke is a Florida native who loves fashion, sports, philanthropy, and traveling.

Ancient people who made these shoes have already developed the skills for utilizing animal skin and sewing them together to make footwear. In the case of the Oregon sandals, the shoes are twined – they have a flat, close-twined sole, usually with five rope wraps. The twining starts from the heel to the toes, and was then woven back towards the heel. For padding and warmth, rabbit fur or pine needles were sewed in.

Liz Rehnke: To take on Asia and Australia

Having been to Africa on mission trips with her family, Liz Rehnke wishes to turn her attention to the world’s largest and smallest continents. This blog will discuss what would-be explorers like her would expect in the diverse landscapes and cultures of the region.

Elizabeth Rehnke Photo Credit: ottomen.com

Asia is the most expansive of the traditional seven continents of Earth, playing host to the world’s highest peaks, terrains that vary from conifers to steppe and from desert to jungle, and many different cultures and the wonders they have built. The cultures of Asia are so diverse that it would be fallacious to think of its denizens as a single people. Whether one views the monuments of India or China, visit the region’s dynamic cities, or trek across the continent’s untamed wilderness, Asia offers much to the world traveler.

In addition, shopaholics like Liz Rehnke can peruse the variety of deals in the many marketplaces in the continent’s major cities.

Australia, the world’s smallest continent, has just as much variety in its terrain and culture as the others. The landmass itself is a single country—the only continent to be so—which has a culture made up of the many aboriginal tribes, the descendants of British colonizers, and recent immigrants, with stark contrasts in the Western major cities and the rugged wilderness.

Elizabeth Rehnke: Stephen Soderbergh’s philosophy in Ocean’s Eleven

Elizabeth Rehnke’s collection of movies includes a remake of the 1960 film by Lewis Milestone, Ocean’s Eleven. Liz agrees that Soderbergh’s take on the Rat Pack classic appeals to cultural and social sensibilities by exploring the politics of manliness. The first moments of the film saw Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, as a ‘man out of time’ experiencing a destructive phase after his wife left him. Ocean presents himself as an emblem of male strength as viewed by the juxtaposition of the tuxedo-clad character wedged in the backdrop of present-day prison.

Elizabeth Rehnke Photo Caption: uyirvani.com

The heist presents two distinct value systems. First is money. The heist saw the gang of 11 members reaping far greater than they could have achieved individually - $ 165 million. For members of the audience like Elizabeth Rehnk, this achievement signals consciousness concerning the capacities of men to obtain greater rewards amid social realities such as violence and imprisonment.

Elizabeth Rehnke Photo Caption: thornd.com

Another value system is the heist genre’s appeal. Soderbergh’s film communicates that heist gangs are no ordinary gangs because each member is expected to possess a unique and highly specialized skill that largely contributes to the success of each plan.

Overall, the remake is all about the rewards of solidarity and friendship. Those who exerted more effort and contributed for a stronger brotherhood deserve greater emotional and monetary reward.

Elizabeth Rehnke: The fashion spectator

Elizabeth Rehnke considers herself as a fashion spectator, simply because she holds a strong interest in fashion even though she doesn’t actually work in the industry. And of all the items in the fashion world, she is particularly fond of shoes. In fact, she considers her shoe collection as one of her most prized possessions.

Elizabeth Rehnke Photo Credit: Niceclothestoday.com

Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, Ms. Rehnke is regularly on the lookout for the latest trends via runway reviews from fashion magazines and the Internet. She also dares to try these trends, creating an ensemble that fits her lifestyle, which she completes with the right pair of shoes.

And for 2012, Elizabeth Rehnke is just one of the many fashion enthusiasts all over the world who are excited to see what the New Year’s about to offer, fashion-wise.

Elizabeth Rehnke Photo Credit: Pebblesbaby.com

For the early part of the year, pastel or caramel colors, such as cream, baby pink, coral, and yellow are in. In the runways, hints of yellow are all over the creations of D&G, Moschino, and Mulberry. However, fashion experts have long pronounced that orange and corals will be the prime colors of the season.

Also, there’s a great play on patterns for the year, which Liz Rehnke, among other fashion savvies, truly adores. Dolce & Gabbana’s S/S 2012 collection, for example, used fruits as print patterns on dresses. Kaleidoscopic, wild and ethnic, and combined prints were also spotted in the runway. Fans of animal prints can add a whole new collection to their closets as reptile printed shoes, bags, and clothes are big this season.
