Leaves are just starting to fall, but in the fashion world, it is more spring than autumn. This was evident as designers like Peter Som and Joseph Altuzarra unveiled their Spring 2013 collections during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

The fashion marathon highlighted dreamy floral prints, which were very much evident in Peter Som’s show. The Carpenters’ “Close to You” was the perfect song for Som’s model to sashay to as she showed off the designer’s jeans in a pink print that reminded fashionistas like Elizabeth Rehnke of bubble gum.

Joseph Altuzarra was also in a spring state of mind but with a twist. The collection he unveiled had a bit of fall flavor in it. He said, “Women always tell me, ‘Why can’t spring clothes be more like fall’ -- layered but at the same time light.”

So that was what he did. The standout pieces in Altuzarra’s collection include slim-fitting linen skirts in an antique floral print which were combined with French blue cotton shirts embroidered with clear stones and finished with roomy gray-blue striped jackets.

Although most of the designers who paraded their collections during the fashion extravaganza stayed loyal to the usual spring look (floral prints and pastel colors), many fashion watchers agree that bold styles dominated the week-long show. Saturated colors and edgy patterns were all over the runway. Cutouts and corsets were frequent sightings, along with longer leather hemlines and skirt suits. These may not be reminiscent of spring, but for Liz Rehnke and other stylish women out there, these represent what fashion is all about: There’s no such thing as typical.
